Gaia:This article reflects upon the recent and successful smart city paradigm, which seems to be influential in different fields (economic, cultural, political, etc.) and disciplines (social sciences, ICT studies, etc.). Starting from a brief reconstruction of the origin of the concept, this contribution focuses on the urban dimension of the paradigm and on the role that the most advanced technology plays in reconfiguring cities and urban spaces within cities.
