| Summary: | The objective of this writing is to analyze the floods that took place in the period 2014-2021 in the city of San Luis Potosi, through the development of a database that includes the spatio-temporal distribution, as well as the seasonality of floods caused by rainfall. In addition, to contribute to the literature on sustainable best practices to improve the mitigation capacity and management of flood events in urbanized areas. For the analysis, historical data on flood damages were first collected and analyzed through of a database, including frequency, temporal evolution, spatial distribution and seasonality. A review of the measures implemented to mitigate this phenomenon was also carried out. Finally, recommendations are made for existing sustainable urban infrastructure that can be implemented to mitigate the high impacts of flooding. The findings indicate the existence of more frequent and higher intensity flooding in the urban area, in addition to the lack of current policies for stormwater management with sustainable solutions. Interdisciplinary studies are needed for the implementation of sustainable strategies and interventions adapted to the local socioeconomic situation and cultural environment. By developing a database on flooding in urban areas, we will be able to advance our understanding of the factors that cause flooding and to carry out strategic planning and actions for the efficient use of surface water in the city of San Luis Potosi, which is one of the initial steps towards the development of a sustainable city. |
