Description
Summary:In this article, we present a succinct version of the findings obtained through a qualitative-interpretative study centered on the analysis of the re-signification process of mass media cultural products by a group of secondary level students in Cd. Juárez, México (2009-2010). The main objective was to expose, document and analyze the influence of media sociocultural representations promoted by media culture in order to illustrate the importance of the promotion of critical media literacy as part of public policies in education. The main argument was that the young students (female and male) who participated, are uncritical of the non-representation or mis-representation of cultural diversity (gender/sex, race/ethnicity, and class) in media messages, mainly in commercial media. This study was conducted by Elia Rodríguez Pacheco as part of the requirements to obtain the degree of MA in Social Science with a specialized area in Culture and Gender granted by the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez.
