Description
Summary:In this work, the expansion of Santiago de Cali, Colombia was analyzed through a multi-temporal study between 1986-2016. The main inputs for its development were satellite images of the Landsat sensors, compiled statistical files of the National Administrative Department of Statistics (dane, as in Spanish), Technical document of the Territorial Planning Plan and characterizations that allowed contributing to the study in mention. The object-based supervised classification was used as a technique for digital processing, in addition to the review of data to define the conditions present at each moment studied. The results obtained reflects an increase in constructed area of 23 % and an increase in the population of 924 226 inhabitants. The analysis explains the context of urban growth in four stages of physical extension of the city. In these scenarios, a population density of inhabitants per square kilometer of 20 383.1 in 1986 and 22 849.6 in 2016 is estimated, which shows that Santiago de Cali is a city with a poorly dispersed growth pattern.
